Phumi Morare

Phumi Morare is an NAACP Image Award-winning, Oscar-shortlisted writer and director from South Africa. Passionate about exploring the Black female gaze, she tells intimate stories of ordinary heroes, people of color, and women. Her short film Lakutshon’ Ilanga (When The Sun Sets) won an NAACP Image Award, a Student Academy Award Gold Medal, and was shortlisted for the 94th Academy Awards. It premiered at major festivals like Telluride and Clermont-Ferrand and was acquired by WarnerMedia OneFifty. Her latest project, Why The Cattle Wait, premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival and ARIFF Film Festival. Phumi is a Tribeca Chanel and Berlinale Talents alumna, with an MFA in Film Directing from Chapman University. She also has a background in investment banking and management consulting.
