Khanyi Magubane

Khanyi Magubane is a highly respected media practitioner with 25 years of experience across radio, television, film, and journalism. Armed with a BA in Communications and a BA Honours in Journalism from the University of Johannesburg, she is currently pursuing an MA in Political Studies at Wits University. Magubane’s career began in radio at Talk Radio 702, where she rose to the position of high court reporter before moving to YFM as a drive-time news anchor. She later spent 13 years at SAfm as a talk show host and current affairs producer. Her work in television includes producing critically acclaimed documentaries such as Why Are We So Angry? (2012) and Making Cents (2014), as well as leading productions like Visionaries Lounge on SABC 2. In 2024, she released A Woman of Substance, a film based on the life of midwife and activist Beauty Selela. Magubane is also a prolific screenwriter, having contributed to The Wife Season 3, Isitha – The Enemy, and currently serving as a lead writer for Muvhango.

Beyond media, Magubane is a respected political analyst, frequently appearing on platforms such as Newzroom Afrika, BBC World Service, and Deutsche Welle. She was recognized as one of Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans in Film and Media (2013) and was selected for the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship in 2014. As a sought-after public speaker, she has moderated conferences and facilitated discussions on socio-political and economic issues. With a career spanning journalism, broadcasting, and storytelling, Magubane continues to shape South Africa’s media landscape while using her platform to drive impactful conversations.
