Gary Rathbone

Gary Rathbone is the founder and Director of Sportscape Media, focused on the business of sports media including media rights, broadcasting and sponsorships. The business advises broadcasters and sponsors on media content strategies and acquisitions within an evolving and challenging sports media environment.

He has been involved in the world of Sports Media since the late 1990s, firstly as a journalist and TV producer, co-creating the first ever pan-African football show, The African Soccer Show, as well as the CAF African Player of the Year Awards event, in 2000. In 2008 he moved from the TV journalism into the business of sports media with his appointment by SuperSport as Head of Africa (2008-12). Since then, he has taken up senior roles at broadcasters across Africa including Head of Sport at Zuku in Kenya (2013-14), Director of Sport at Chinese-based Pay TV network StarTimes (2014-16) and Senior Advisor for Sport and Africa for the Discovery Network (2016-17). After a decade working in Nigeria, Kenya, China and the UK, he returned to South Africa in 2018 and was appointed as Head of Sport for the SABC in 2020, a position he held until the end of 2022, when he resigned to launch Sportscape Media.
