Dr. Mashadi Motlana

Dr Motlana is a specialist psychiatrist, mental health advocate and entrepreneur. She has extensive health industry knowledge as a dedicated clinician, health care administrator and academic.

She is also a non executive director of the Clinix Health Group and National Health Care Group. She has held executive positions including deputy CEO at Sechaba Medical Solutions, the administrator of Sizwe Medical Fund, and Clinical Head at Tara Hospital where she was involved in teaching and training of medical students and supervising master’s research for registrars in Psychiatry. She authored a chapter on Stigma in the Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry for Southern Africa.

She helped established a Psychiatric service at Campus Health for students at Wits and consults at the clinic pro bono. She is the co-founder of a social enterprise, the Mina Foundation and the Dr Nthato Motlana Foundation. She is a board member of several NPO’s including SADAG ( the South African Depression and Anxiety Group). She is a sought after speaker on mental health and has made numerous appearances on radio and television. She has presented at international congresses on the subjects of stigma, disparities in access to mental health care services and the socio-economic determinants of mental health.She holds an MBBCh (Wits), Mmed(Psych)UP (cum laude). She is currently a PhD student in Leadership and Change (Antioch University, USA).
