Vusi Africa
Multi award winning director Vusi Africa paved his way as one of South Africa’s most influential contemporary filmmakers when he debuted with the award-winning feature film Letters of Hope(2019) at the 40th DIFF in competition. The film won him the DIFF award for Artistic Bravery and later the inaugural honorary SAFTA for Best Emerging filmmaker.
In 2021 Vusi Africa Wrote & Directed the Kwaito crime film Surviving Gaza which earned him 14 nominations at the 18th Africa Academy Movie Awards making his film the most nominated film. The Africa Movie Academy Awards awarded Vusi Africa best director ,the film went on to win two more additional awards at the Africa Academy including best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Subsequent to his success as an independent filmmaker Vusi Africa was named in the class of the 2022 Mail and Guardian most influential young South Africans. In 2023 Vusi Africa adapted his own film Letters of Hope into an epic musical which debuted at the South African State Theatre. This historical milestone placed him amongst the few names in South Africa whose work has been adapted from screen to stage and vise versa. In 2024 Vusi Africa earned a Masters in Fine Arts from AFDA as their first artist in residence. His career boast of historically and culturally significant work including Banned and Happy: The true story of Happy Sindane which were produced concurrently to mark South Africa’s democratic milestone of 30 years.
